By default the URL for the post is of the form: <domain name>/<year/<month>/<day>/<post title>

This display may not be the most attractive if you want your post still of interest in 5 or 10 years. The date in that case would suggest that the contain may not be relevant anymore.

To change this, you need to go in Settings and select Permalinks.

Wordpress Start Package

By default, Day and name is selected.

Wordpress Start Package

Change the selection to Post name and click on Save Changes.

Wordpress Start Package

A temporary box appears at the top to confirm that the change was saved.

I’ll recommend you to start with a free theme you like before moving to a paid version you could get on http://themeforest.net for example. It will allow you to identify which features are really important to you to select later one a more appropriate one.

WordPress Installation : 3. Connecting WP to the Host Database

Wordpress Installation : MySQL

The next stage is to connect your domain name with your folder you have created on your server. To do that, you need to log on the website where you bought your domain. Each host provider has its own display.

Once it is done you can move on to get the following steps done :

Go to your website to see the following display and choice your preferred langage.

Wordpress Installation : MySQL

In this example I go for British English

Wordpress Installation : MySQL

On this screen, you are asked to collect some information from your host, like the database name, username, password and host. This are the information you will need on the next screen.

Wordpress Installation : MySQL

In my case I have the same name for the Database Name and User Name.

I can also change my password on my Host.

The database host is just <database name>.mysql.db

I change the default wp_ prefix by something a bit longer. It is to protect the website a bit better against attack. If you don’t do it now, you will be able to change it later using the plugin All-in-One Security and Firewall tho.

Wordpress Installation : MySQL

And that’s it for the first part.

Video (2min30s): How to Buy a Domain Name by ovh.com?

Now that you know what will be the topic of your blog and what the name should be, you need to by the domain name and eventually the host if you don’t have one.

Just one note of caution here: you may want to buy one host and two domains. I explain : one would be for your ‘business’ blog and the other one would be directly related to your host. For example, my host is related to veroniquebourcier.fr. I then buy additional domain names which point to the same host using the multi-domain functionality. Indeed, I may decide in the future to stop working with a given ‘business’ domain but I don’t want to lose my host on the way. It is very unlikely that I cancel veroniquebourcier.fr. The same could work with your company name. I’ll show you later on, how to create a multi-domain. But for now, here is how to buy a domain name and a host.

4 Points to Check in order to Validate the Topic of your Blog

The topic of your blog is just essential for the success of your blog. Here are four points you may want to consider.

1. Find a Niche – a Topic which is different from the others (but still has an audience).

The objective of your blog is to convince your future clients to read you. So it’s gonna be easier if you have no competitor. For that you need to search a niche. That was the case of my programming blog. When I created it in 2006, there were no blog on this programming language in French. Actually I don’t even know any now.

If your topic is already fairly popular on the blogging world, you will have to find an angle which is unique. What is for example so specific to introduction-to-blogging.com? First its objective is initiate people to build their own training in order to build together a plateforme offering high quality training material across the world in various languages. Second I travel the world to figure out where you could go blogging and travel around the world. Last I don’t know any woman explaining you how to blog and make a business out of it 😉

2. Choose a topic you are passionate about

8 Reasons to Start Blogging

Why should you create a blog? Here are 8 reasons to move forwards.

1/ Learning by explaining to others : how do you know you really know something? If you are able to explain it, it confirms that you now manage the knowledge. A blog is a good tool to write things down. The process of writing force you to organise and clarify things in your head. As a beginner in your topic, you use simple words which are much more accessible for other beginners.

2/ Organise your notes : A blog can contain different kind of supports: video, audio, picture, text. All this information is then put by categories and connected using hyperlinks. As you are the one who organize this information, it is easier for you to know where to find it later on. Each time I search some programming code for my work I go on my programming blog and find the information very quickly that way. Let say now that you want to write a book but you don’t know where to start. You can use a blog to put down all the information available in a single place. Actually the primary reason why I started programming blog was to create a training programme.

3/ Increase your Network : your blog is like a visit card which is share around the world. By its content you show your skills, your expertise, the topics you are interested in. People reading you can decide to join your network via Facebook, Linkedin, Viadeo, Xing, Twitter or to contact you directly per email. You are in connection with people having common interests, who you would probably not have met otherwise.
